Problem: Louisiana is 49th in health of its citizens due to high rates of obesity, infant mortality, preventable hospitalizations and high rates of infectious disease.
Answer: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As Louisiana continues to rebuild its health care infrastructure we must develop a system with strategic emphasis on primary and preventive health care as opposed to ambulatory care. Over the last five years, I have worked to develop more primary care clinics across the state. We developed the Capitol City Family Health Center here in Baton Rouge. I further established it as an important policy initiative to expand primary care clinics by establishing a 40 million dollar fund for that purpose. The development of the right kind of health care delivery system is essential to Louisiana moving from 49th to 1st in health care outcomes.
